What is the Earned Income Tax Credit?
The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a federal tax credit in 2023 tax season for households like yours who generally earn $63,398 or less a year. The amount of your refund increases depending on your number of children and is often between $600-$7,430 with an average of $2,384.

File Your Taxes for Free
IRS Free File lets qualified taxpayers prepare and file federal income tax returns online using guided tax preparation software. It’s safe, easy and no cost to you. Those who don’t qualify can still use Free File Fillable Forms. Individual tax filers, regardless of income, can use IRS Free File to electronically request an automatic tax-filing extension.
If your adjusted gross income was $79,000 or less, you may find one or more free tax filing options at apps.irs.gov/app/freeFile.

The IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs offer free basic tax return preparation to qualified individuals. The VITA program has operated for over 50 years. VITA sites offer free tax help to people who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns, including:
- People who generally make $64,000 or less
- Persons with disabilities; and
- Limited English-speaking taxpayers
